Ankara : The Department of Computer Engineering and the Institute of Engineering and Science of Bilkent University, 2010.Thesis (Ph. D.) -- Bilkent University, 2010.Includes bibliographical references leaves 92-108.This thesis is about modeling and simulation of fluids and cloth-like deformable objects by the physically-based simulation paradigm. Simulated objects are modeled with particles and their interaction with each other and the environment is defined by particle-to-particle forces. We propose several improvements over the existing particle simulation techniques. Neighbor search algorithms are crucial for the performance efficiency and robustness of a particle system. We present a sorting-based neighbor search method which operates on a uniform grid, and can be parallelizable. We improve upon the existing fluid surface generation methods so that our method captures surface details better since we consider the relative position of fluid particles to the fluid surface. We investigate several alternatives of particle interaction schema (i.e. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, the Discrete Element Method, and Lennard-Jones potential) for the purpose of defining fluid-fluid, fluid-cloth, fluid-boundary interaction forces. We also propose a practical way to simulate knitwear and its interaction with fluids. We employ capillary pressure–based forces to simulate the absorption of fluid particles by knitwear. We also propose a method to simulate the flow of miscible fluids. Our particle simulation system is implement to exploit parallel computing capabilities of the commodity computers. Specifically, we implemented the proposed methods on multicore CPUs and programmable graphics boards. The experiments show that our method is computationally efficient and produces realistic results.Bayraktar, SerkanPh.D

The aim of this study was to define the perceptions of instructors of Near East University based on their level of readiness for total quality management. Total quality management is a management mentality that provides institution or organization with maximum productivity, reduced level of defects, high level of satisfaction for participants and principles of democracy within a company. Acceptance of total quality management as a mentality rather than a tool seems to be the most important way to implement it successfully. For this purpose, a special questionnaire has been prepared, which was checked for its reliability and validity by Cronbach`s Alpha analysis (.963). The questionnaire was composed of two parts. The first part included personar information, whereas the second part focused on the students in terms of the centered, quality concept centered, continuous education centered, management, manager and leadership centered, measurement of quality centered and organization structure centered factors of total quality management. A total of 69 suggestions were related to these factors. The research was conducted with 120 participants who were instructors at Near East University and also residents of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Collected data were analyzed by the SPSS 12.00 statistical package program through T-Test, Variance Analysis (ANOVA) and LSD Test. Furthermore, descriptive interpretations have been made by using frequencies, percentages, standard deviations and arithmetical means. In this study, the perceptions of Near East University instructors based on their readiness level for total quality management were identified. Additionally, the instructors perception levels were analyzed according variables of: faculty/vocational school, employment status (full time/part time), degree level, education field, gender, professional level and position were analyzed. Based on these variables, their perceptions of student centered, participation centered, quality concept centered, continuos education centered, management, manager and leadership centered, measurement of quality centered and organization structure centered wre analized. -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2001Bu çalışmada öncelikle yapı denetimi kavramının dünya genelindeki tarihsel gelişimi incelenmiş, özellikle Anadolu tarihinde meydana gelen doğal afetler ile bunlara karşı alınan tedbirlerden bahsedilmiştir. In the first chapter of this thesis, the worldwide development of construction control and the disasters that occured in Anatolia including precautions against the possible ones were mentioned. The following chapter explains construction control methods applied in developed countries and also the supervision comprehension of these systems. The researches point that insurance guarantee is used as an accomplishment for most of the systems. Having low or high self-esteem is considered to have an effect on one's attitude to wards himself or her self as well as to wards other individuals in the society. The refore, it is importantto determine the factors that improve individuals' self-esteem. Considering that the quality of education obtained by an individual has an impact on self-esteem, it is imperative to pointout what factors in the education process boostone's self-esteem and to execute such factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of sporting activities on self-esteem of police officers with respect to different variables. The total of 266 police officers, 32 female and 234 male, who serve in the City of Erzurum in Turkey participated in this survey. Scale of Self Esteem, developed by Kuzgun (2005), was used in order to gather data. T test and variance analysis were utilized as well. The difference among the groups' choices is evaluated based on P 0.05 significancelevel. Based on the evaluation of the survey results, no difference among police officers was observed in terms of average self-esteem with respect to gender and sporting habits, where as, a difference was observed in terms of average self-esteem with respect to the type of sport performed. Those who perform individual sportst end to have higher self-esteem compared to those who perform team sports or no sport at all. Since, having police officers with high self-esteem serve and interact with individuals will have a positive effect on social interactions in the society. It is imperative to provide opportunities and encoruge policeofficers to do individual sports and to further study the factors that may help increase the self-esteem of such individuals
